Though I have to say, you did a really truly good job being stubborn and peeling Jensen out of his GTC performative shell. But, my assumption is that you’re sticking too close to the last thing you heard and somehow you find yourself in the position where you defend views that aren’t necessarily your own.

Ksenia Se: 0:30 And what you actually pulled off in this interview, what nobody seems to realize, is you got Jensen Huang to call Dario Amodei’s Anthropic a mindset of a loser. And that happened precisely because you stubbornly kept pushing back on the same premise, not even your own premise. Bravo.

Ksenia Se: 0:47 And now, hello everyone, my name is Ksenia and in today’s Attention Span, I’ll do two things. By dissecting the Dwarkesh and Jensen Huang interview, I’ll show how playing devil’s advocate and parroting someone else’s premise strips the corporation gloss off of the conversation and creates a genuinely heated argument even when the real opponent isn’t in the room. And based on two examples from this conversation, I will also explain a few extremely important things about how the AI industry actually works right now. Two examples: Mifos and TPU. Let’s go.

Ksenia Se: 1:29 Okay, let’s start with the hottest part: NVIDIA’s restrictions, China chip bans, and Jensen’s now-meme phrase, “You’re not talking to somebody who woke up a loser.” What caused that reaction? Let’s see.

Ksenia Se: 1:41 Dwarkesh asks a reasonably logical question: Does selling advanced AI chips to China risk helping Chinese labs train and scale cyber offensive models like Mifos, creating a threat to American companies and national security?

Ksenia Se: 1:59 This is the part of the conversation that lit up the internet. But the internet thinks it was a debate about national security. It’s not. It’s a conversation about what Jensen is trying to frame as success for the whole country versus success for one company that is advocating for cheap spend, and that company is Anthropic.

Ksenia Se: 2:18 When Jensen says “loser mindset,” the line that launched a thousand tweets and memes, he is not talking to Dwarkesh. He is talking about Dario Amodei.

Ksenia Se: 2:29 Dwarkesh even says it’s himself. He opens the China section by saying, “I actually don’t know what I think about whether it’s good to sell chips to China or not, but I’ve played devil’s advocate against my guest. Ksenia Se: 3:00 Loser mindset. The premise that if we compete in China, we’re going to lose that market anyway, that’s a loser thinking. You’re not talking to someone who woke up a loser. That loser attitude, that loser premise makes no sense to me.

Ksenia Se: 3:15 But who is this loser? It’s not Dwarkesh Patel, a podcaster in his 20s, and it’s certainly not Jensen. It’s Dario Amodei, the CEO of the company that just told the world it built a model so dangerous, it can’t be released publicly. The man whose position on export controls, sell nothing, restrict everything, would cost Nvidia the second largest technology market on the planet. And in Jensen’s view, it would cost America being ahead.

Ksenia Se: 3:45 During that heated discussion Jensen asks, “But what the f*** did you just f***ing say about my ecosystem? Why are you so fixated on that AI model? That one company? For what reason?” And for understanding the whole landscape of AI, this is a very important moment. In Jensen’s eyes, Anthropic’s view is too one-sided, too short-term. It’s dangerous in the long run for the whole country. And yes, of course Jensen wants Nvidia to succeed. But in this outburst you can see that what pisses him off the most is that the whole country might lose because of some young and inexperienced guys who think they are playing gods. Yes, I’m talking about Anthropic.

Ksenia Se: 4:27 Now, beneath all that heat there is one more moment where Jensen lands his strongest actual argument and Dwarkesh completely fails to engage with it.

Ksenia Se: 4:36 Dwarkesh’s whole case rests on a chain: compute is the input to train models, Mifos has dangerous cyber-offensive capabilities, America got there first because we have more compute. Every chip we send to China shortens our lead. Logic, except Jensen breaks it at the first link. He says Mifos was trained on a fairly mundane capacity and a fairly mundane amount of it by an extraordinary company. If that’s true, the whole argument collapses. The bottleneck for building Mifos wasn’t the chips, it was the extraordinary company, meaning the researchers, the algorithms, the years of work on safety evaluations and red teaming.

Ksenia Se: 5:22 And Jensen connects this to a deeper point that he was trying to make for the whole conversation. Great computer science is where the real development is. Algorithms give you 10x, Moore’s Law gives you 25% per year. And 50% of the world’s AI researchers are Chinese now. Their AI research, he says, is their fundamental advantage. And I think it’s super important to understand.

Ksenia Se: 5:49 This is one of the most profound points in the entire conversation, and Dwarkesh didn’t really pick it up. He pivots back to flops. He says China has one-tenth of US flops, and they go in circles and again and again.

Ksenia Se: 6:00 Here is the thing I noticed while watching. Comparing not publishing weights to not selling chips to China is just wrong. There is a completely different kind of gating. When Anthropic holds back weights for months so the American companies can patch their zero-days, there is a known mechanism, a known timeline, and a known outcome. It even might be helpful, as I said previously in my video. But when you restrict chip sales to China, there is no equivalent mechanism. You’re not patching anything. You are hoping that the compute gap translates into a capability gap and that the capability gap translates into a safety gap and that the safety gap holds for long enough to matter. That’s three assumptions, each of which Jensen has a credible argument against.

Ksenia Se: 6:52 And then Dwarkesh’s analogies make it worse. He’s just falling for the fear analogies. He uses Dario’s Boeing selling nukes to North Korea line, which makes Jensen’s blood pressure spike visibly. Then enriched uranium, gosh, twice. And Jensen dismisses both as loosey. And frankly, he is right because these analogies reach for moral weight when what Dwarkesh needs is a mechanism. What specific harm does each additional chip enable? What’s the counterfactual? He never builds this technically. He just keeps reaching for the scariest metaphor available.

Ksenia Se: 7:29 Now, to be fair to Dwarkesh, he does get one thing right that Jensen dances around the entire time. He keeps asking Jensen to acknowledge a simple cost, not a catastrophic cost. Just, is there any cost at all to sending more compute to China? Any marginal downside? And Jensen will not say yes. He keeps counterattacking with the cost of not selling, which is a real cost. I’m not dismissing it. But when you refuse to acknowledge any tradeoff on the other side, you lose credibility, even on the parts where you’re right. Jensen simultaneously argues: our chips are vastly superior and China already has all the compute it needs. We dominate the Chinese market and they’d manage fine without us. And you might think that you have to pick one, that Jensen has to pick one. What if you are simultaneously thinking about the short term and the long term? And here is where Jensen’s argument actually has real force. And this is the part Dwarkesh does not look deep enough into the future to see.

Ksenia Se: 8:35 Dwarkesh does not look as far ahead as Jensen, which is understandable. He’s young. His world runs on two-year AI capability cycles. We’ve been into an AI capability cycle for only, what, three years? It’s nothing. Jensen has been running the same company for over 30 years. And you know who is also young? Dario Amodei. Anthropic is his first company that he has been running for only… Just think about it. Five years. Yes, it was founded in 2021. And then Jensen makes a 15-year argument.

Ksenia Se: 9:08 It goes like this. China is the largest contributor to open source AI models in the world. He says, fact. China is the largest contributor to open source software in the world. Fact. You can check this on GitHub and Hugging Face. DeepSeek, Gwen, the list keeps growing, even considering that China started to close a little bit.

Ksenia Se: 9:29 Today, all of that is built on the American tech stack, on Nvidia. Chinese researchers prototype on CUDA. Chinese open source models are optimized for GPUs. This is very important. And when a developer in India or Brazil or Saudi Arabia downloads an open source model and deploys it, it runs on Nvidia hardware because that’s what it was built on.

Ksenia Se: 9:51 Now think about what happens if you cut that link. If you ban chip sales, Chinese developers don’t stop building. Absolutely not. They just stop building on your stack. Open source models get optimized for Huawei instead. And open source models are not like proprietary products. They spread. They get downloaded, fine-tuned, deployed by millions of developers who don’t care about geopolitics. They care about what runs on the hardware they can actually buy. Those models diffuse to India, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, the fastest growing AI markets on the planet. And in 2035, when America wants its tech stack to be the global default, the Global South is already running on a Chinese stack. Not out of loyalty, out of practicality. That’s how technology standards get set. Not by policy papers or aspiration, but by what developers actually use.

And neither of them ever names this mismatch. That’s why Jensen keeps saying, your premise is wrong.

Ksenia Se: 11:21 And what Dwarkesh should have said, he should ask, what exactly is my premise here? And then they should align themselves on the same timeline. Because from Jensen’s 15-year view, Dwarkesh’s 2-year window is the wrong premise. And from Dwarkesh’s 2-year view, Jensen’s 15-year story is dangerously beside the point. They’re both right about their own time horizons, and they’re just not in the same conversation, which happened with Dwarkesh before. But I guess this is his power. This is how he makes the people in front of him, powerful people, knowledgeable people, getting mad and spewing out some amazing memes and actually insights. But again, it’s problematic.

Ksenia Se: 12:00 It was not Dwarkesh’s view or premise or horizon. Pushing back and repeating the same premise over and over, Dwarkesh looks visibly uncomfortable because he was catching all the heat that wasn’t meant for him. This was a fight between Jensen Huang’s long-term view and Dario Amodei’s short-term idea of what’s best for the company and what’s best for America. We just haven’t had that debate directly yet.

Ksenia Se: 12:29 Now, the TPUs. Here, Dwarkesh is trying to question NVIDIA’s moat. And since one of the last people he recently talked to was probably from Google, he makes it about TPUs, Anthropic’s recent multi-gigawatt deal with Google and Broadcom for up to 1 million TPUs. He says, look, Anthropic just committed the majority of its compute to TPUs. Google, obviously, runs on TPUs. So if you look at these big AI companies, a lot of their compute is no longer NVIDIA. And he backs it with a technical argument he clearly heard from his AI researcher friends. AI is just a very predictable matrix multiplies again and again. A TPU is a big systolic array optimized for exactly that, and a GPU wastes die area on warp schedulers and thread switching. So why isn’t TPU the better architecture for the thing that’s actually making you all this money? It’s a fair question, but it’s a question from 2023. And let me tell you why.

Ksenia Se: 13:25 Jensen is right when he says Anthropic is a unique instance in this situation, not a trend. He says without Anthropic, why would there be any TPU growth at all? It’s 100% Anthropic. That sounds defensive, but it’s actually close to true. And here’s the thing that Dwarkesh doesn’t seem to know, or at least doesn’t bring up. Google cannot even make enough TPUs to serve its own internal needs plus Anthropic. Google’s own VP of AI infrastructure, Amin Vahdat, said publicly that TPU demand is so oversubscribed that the company is turning customers away. Their seven and eight-year-old TPUs are running at 100% utilization, and Google has to double its serving capacity every six months just to keep up. Sundar Pichai told employees that Google Cloud’s numbers, which were already strong, would have been much better if they had more compute. And it gets worse. Google’s TPU manufacturing is constrained by the same advanced packaging bottleneck at TSMC that everybody else faces. TSMC’s CoWoS capacity is already committed to Apple and NVIDIA. Fubri Research projects that Google’s TPU shipments in 2026 will be lower than what most analysts expected. Google has about 5% of the AI chip market, NVIDIA has 78%. So when Dwarkesh asks, will TPUs break NVIDIA’s hold on AI compute? The answer is not yet.

Ksenia Se: 15:00 It is almost embarrassingly simple. No, not because TPUs are bad, they’re very good, but because Google can barely make enough of them for Google and Anthropic, let alone for the rest of the world. And the rest of the world needs chips desperately. So the idea that TPUs will compete with NVIDIA for the broader market is not a serious near-term proposition. It’s a fantasy built on one deal with one company that Jensen let slip through his fingers because, as he admitted later in the night and it’s very interesting, he didn’t deeply internalize how much compute a frontier lab would need. That admission is quite revealing. The man who missed Anthropic’s scaling needs is now telling Anthropic their worldview is wrong. There’s a kind of poetry in that.

Ksenia Se: 15:47 So what do we learn from this interview about AI? A few things. About NVIDIA, ironically, it’s Dwarkesh not being fully prepared that revealed the most, not for the first time. Jensen’s favored five-layer cake — GPU chips, systems, models, applications — that he talks about in every GTC, now sound much more understandable. On GTC stage, it’s super performative, rehearsed, the kind of framing a company pushes when it wants to sound like a platform and not just a chip vendor.
