So if you wouldn’t mind, can you talk a little bit about the difference between proof in mathematics and other claims that we might make in the sciences and life more generally?
David Deutsch: 1:04 No, of course not. So, as you say, I mean, as soon as you see a claim that somebody has proved something, then you know that they’re making a claim about the physical world. Because proofs are done on paper, in brains, in computers — all of which are physical objects whose behavior is an empirical matter.

But to emancipate children from the institutions of society that are admittedly, even by their proponents, in many ways oppressive — that is a worthwhile long-term project. Most of the parents who object to school do not really object to the underlying mechanism of it. They want their child taught their version of obedience.

Naval Ravikant: 26:53 So in your model it’s closer to an unschooling than a homeschooling, because homeschooling is just school inside a home. In context, yes. Unschooling might be, here’s a library, here’s your musical instrument, here’s a computer, here’s whatever — you have access, you choose.
David Deutsch: 27:09 Well, yes, although giving access is itself not a mechanical process. It involves being interested in what the child is interested in.

David Deutsch: 29:34 Well, I don’t know the fact of the matter about how the brain works, and I don’t think neuroscientists do either. But I’m sure that’s not the dominant factor. The dominant factor is interest. And I don’t think we are like dogs anyway in the first place. I don’t think that dogs learning tricks is a good metaphor for humans learning things. It’s a different thing.
David Deutsch: 30:11 Thomas Szasz says that they should walk in different doors into different buildings in the university to discuss those things. Different people are different. There are people who like to learn languages — you can find them on the internet. And I’m flabbergasted by what they can do. They’re people who learn Latin, but not just learn Latin, they learn realistic Latin — not as it’s taught in Latin lessons, but how it was actually spoken. How do you find out how it was actually spoken? Well, this is a tremendous sophisticated branch of history where they can actually learn a lot about how people used to speak. And I saw a video of a guy walking around Rome talking to priests in classical Latin and to see if they would understand him. And they kind of half understood him. And then when they realized what he was doing — what’s happening? — and then he would reply in Medieval Latin what he was doing. I’m doing an experiment. And then they would understand. But he had the right Medieval Church Latin accent and they have the present-day Church Latin accent.
David Deutsch: 31:22 And there are also people who learn lots of languages and speak it like a native — can’t be distinguished from a native. So why are those people so rare? Well, I don’t want to do it. If I could do it by snapping my fingers, I definitely would. But I’m not sufficiently interested to engage with other languages to the extent that I would have to. By the way, another thing is that people are constantly learning their own language, their native language. And if one is interested in communication, one is doing that all the time. No two people speak the same English.
Naval Ravikant: 31:58 Therefore communication, one of the reasons that Popper says, you know, you can’t communicate perfectly — one of the reasons for that is that everybody speaks a different English. Everybody means a different thing by the word thought, or freedom, and idea, and so on. Everybody means something different, even within the exact sciences — even, you know, within physics.
David Deutsch: 32:32 They overlap enough to be able to communicate well, very well sometimes, never perfectly. And sometimes they find it hard to communicate even imperfectly, even though they have ostensibly gone through the same learning process. But every physicist is different, every physicist has different problem situations, has a different set of ideas that they think of as what physics is, and they differ.

Naval Ravikant: 38:18 Yeah, I find it remarkable. Whatever the topic du jour happens to be, you know whatever the political fashion of the day is, somebody wants to mandate it.
David Deutsch: 38:54 I suppose one thing that young people are ever eager to do is to emulate people that they admire.

Naval Ravikant: 41:57 Another question I had, it seems like you’re deeply — the optimistic viewpoint about children and people and minds and freedom comes from a deep belief that there’s no ceiling on what individual creative thought can do. So, how much of a person’s thoughts and destiny are determined by nature versus nurture versus your own creativity?
David Deutsch: 42:51 Ah, well, that, okay, that’s again more than one question. But let me answer the meta-question first. So the idea is, is the content of your thoughts determined more by the content of your DNA or by the content of your culture? Well, who knows? It’s not encoded in your DNA that you will on a particular day pick up a particular book and read it.
David Deutsch: 43:57 But then, the important thing that happens is that you think about that and you have ideas of your own. So, if you have this view of what human thought is, then it’s totally unsurprising that two siblings, brought up in the same household, with the same culture, will turn out to think very differently. The ones who never had a TV and never watched a Faraday documentary are going to differ from the ones who did.
David Deutsch: 45:00 are treated in a similar way. There’s a sort of compulsion to deny this among people who want to measure heritability.
Naval Ravikant: 45:19 The trivial way that you’ve pointed out yourself when talking about this is if, for example, twins are separated at birth and raised apart, they have a similar appearance, similar age, so they’ll be treated alike by the world to some extent.
David Deutsch: 45:42 Yeah, and not only appearance but behavior. So there are inborn behaviors, like emotional responses, that are heritable to some degree. So they share those. They share appearance. They share a culture, because even when separated at birth they’re typically placed in similar cultural contexts. So a lot of the “shared variance” is not what people think it is.
David Deutsch: 46:40 I was once having this very argument with Michael Lockwood and he was saying well, what if Mozart had been brought up in a remote tribe and never heard music? So I said, yeah, I can’t say that won’t happen. It’s got nothing to do with what we’re arguing about.
Naval Ravikant: 47:52 I was always… not forced, but I was always harassed when I was a kid to go outside and play. I would much rather have been inside reading random useless magazines and books and whatever happened to be lying around. But I find that I learned a lot from doing that.

Naval Ravikant: 48:24 You’re a very rigorous thinker and I think you’re very careful in the claims that you make. Are there any fanciful or speculative claims about how the universe might work, or how we might work, that you think don’t have a lot of evidence yet but you find interesting?
David Deutsch: 49:24 Yeah, there are many such things. As you know, I think that AGI, when it is attained, will be by people who realize that creative thought is something we already know how to do. We already know what it is. It’s to have ideas, to criticize them, and to replace them.
David Deutsch: 51:00 Is it that Mozart was trying to do? Why is it that he has this amazing ability that the rest of us don’t? If I try and say whistle a tune with random notes or play random notes on the piano, it doesn’t sound like anything Mozart wrote. So what’s the structure he’s drawing on? But I don’t want to write something that’s like that’s good in the same sense as Mozart’s. So another thing is, I think the pattern of — well, before I say the pattern, as I keep saying, fanciful.
Naval Ravikant: 53:08 So there’s one final topic I’ve been wanting to discuss with you, but I don’t even know how to broach this. And then there’s some people who go down the consciousness route and say, “Well, consciousness, you know, is itself the explanation for everything.” The universal consciousness seems very happy all the time, says that we’re all just little fragments of it, and so on.
David Deutsch: 54:33 Well, I think it’s important to give up on the idea of ultimate explanation. So, often when people speak about the ultimate explanation, they’re hoping there’s a final answer at the bottom of all this.
David Deutsch: 55:14 And people who think that consciousness is — that you understand consciousness when you get into a kind of meditative state and you experience the thing — what they’re really pointing to is that science uncovers problems.
